Is the umbrella the new balloon???

Remember my post about our engagement photo shoot on the Brooklyn Bridge?

Theresa over at
Diagnosis Deferred posted these great Candice Stringham pics last week and asked "Is the umbrella the new balloon?"

It reminded me that I had some Brooklyn Bridge umbrella photos too. Not because I was ahead of the balloon curve but because it was actually raining off and on that day! Of course, I did bring along my prettiest umbrella...

Here are some pics:

The umbrella can be a great shooting accessory for a few reasons. Not only do couples look totally adorable under one - it can act as a perfect scrim for a harshly-sunny day. We use translucent, white umbrellas for diffusing strobes all the time on location, and a white umbrella from target can do the same with the giant light-source that is the sun.

We just bought a bright green umbrella in our logo color to use as a fun prop in our future shoots :) Anything that helps loosen a couple up or adds just a touch of flair to a scene is a bonus when you're going for a wide variety of looks during a shoot.

I work with many bridal venues and I am finding that umbrellas or parasoles have really increased in popularity. Looks like the age old look is beginning to resurface.

Love, love, love umbrellas in wedding photography. We had our wedding in the late afternoon on the beach in Kauai and gave all 16 of our guests colorful umbrellas just in case it rained! The plan was to at least have a really awesome photo if we did get a little rain shower. It was actually so hot that a lot of guests used them as parasols!

Very nice! Note to self: Need to get nicer umbrella, rather than $5 kind from guys on street corners who chant "Umbrellaumbrellaumbrella!!!!"

It is pouring outside as I type this, and I am very happy to be inside.
